Obituary for Tala'i Ma'afala (Misa)

Tala'i Misa Ma'afala was born July 22, 1930 to Sione Misa and Sevi Misa in Manu'a Samoa. The youngest of nine children. Tala'i excelled in school and was a good nurse in Samoa. At 18 years old Tala'i moved to California. She met her husband Sio Ma'afala in San Diego, Ca. She supported him while he was serving in the United States Marine Corps in Korea where he died in the line of duty. Sio and Tala'i's union blessed us with Ben, Ana, and Susie Ma'afala. Tala'i was a founding member of The First Samoan Congregation Church. She was active in the church under the leadership of Reverend Suitonu. Tala'i continued to care for others providing Samoan massages known as "fofo" and helping several families get established in California. Tala'i was a very strong and smart woman. She enjoyed eating and visiting with her friends, getaways with her grandchildren, and walked everyday before being diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Dementia. Tala'i remained determined to do things herself and go where and when she wanted to go. Eventually, Ana Ma'afala and the family took care of her as she did for so many others. Even in old age, she remained strong and did not need any medication. On June 12, 2021 Tala'i was reunited with her siblings Faioa Matavao, Sosene Misa, Maneta Upega Misa, Aukuso Tuiveta Misa, Laginana Measina Tuimanu'a Lagai, Tahiti Misa, and Manu O'leau Faaifo Misa who preceded her in death. Tala'i is survived by her children Ben Ma'afala, Ana Ma'afala, Susie Sipolu Jackson, Son in-law Robert Howard Jackson, grandchildren Tatiana Tala'i Horn, grandson in-law Justin Jamal Horn, Susie Faith Jackson, Ana Hope Jackson, Taulelei Enriqueta Jackson, Danielle Alyssia Simmons, Joshua Ioane Simmons, and great-grandchildren Cali Palepa Horn, Ava Elana Horn, and Lindsey Jackson Smith and a host of extended family and friends. Tala'i's passing came with deep sadness. We are thankful for the 90 years of life and lasting memories we shared with her. We are at peace knowing the Tala'i is with her husband, family, and in the presence of the Lord.
