Born on April 28, 1936, in San Diego, California, Shirley was the daughter of Conrad and Martha Spencer and had one older sister, Irene Spencer. She attended Bay Park Elementary, Pacific Beach Jr High, and graduated from San Diego High School in 1954. Shirley later completed courses at Cerra Cosa College and Miramar College and proudly became a Certified Administrative Professional. Over the years, she worked for various biotechnology and environmental services companies.
Shirley was a talented pianist and soprano. Her beautiful singing voice as she played piano echoes in her children’s hearts and memories. She enjoyed traveling and living abroad in Norway and England. While in Norway, Shirley learned to cross country ski and enjoyed the sport for years. She also enjoyed playing cards and table games, including Yahtzee, Bunco, with family and friends. Shirley was a Red Hatter, President of Cubic Women’s Club, a Governing Board member of the local chapter of the Women’s Institute in Burwell, England, and a member of Christ the King Church.
Shirley is survived by family whom she dearly loved: her husband, John King; children--Linda Cowle, Alan Redman, Douglas and Pam King, Pamela and Ron Resch, Lynn Angela and Joe Thomas, Gary and Traci Redman; grandchildren--Jason and Laura McElveny, Devin McElveny, James King, Dana Resch, Nikki Resch, Thomas Redman, and Spencer Redman; great-grandchildren--Allison McElveny, Daniel McElveny, Diego McElveny, and Aiden Resch-Lopez; and a large extended family.
Remembered as a loving, caring, and affectionate wife and mother, Shirley’s happy demeanor and positive attitude were influential in many ways. She was as thoughtful as she was kind, and her beautiful smile and cheerful face will remain in our memories always.
Shirley will be laid to rest at Miramar National Cemetery on 03 December 2020. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
