Robert “Bob” C. Standring
Age 80
Resident of Lakeside, CA
Died April 17, 2019 in San Diego, CA of natural causes
Bob Standring was born November 16, 1938 in Rhode Island to Marie and John Standring.
Bob’s family moved to El Cajon, Ca in 1947 and he lived in San Diego’s East County until his death. Bob was an accomplished accordion player, graduate of El Cajon Valley High School and 1957 Cadet of the Year for Grossmont Union High School District. At 17 he lied about his age to join the Army Reserves. Once discovered, he was booted out and convinced his parents to let him join the United States Marine Corps. A proud Leatherneck, Bob was part of a tank battalion at Camp Pendleton.
Bob joined the El Cajon Police Department in 1959 and enjoyed a stellar 32-year career, retiring in 1991 as Police Captain. In his heyday, he was often mistaken for Paul Newman.
Bob had many social interests including WWII History, his weekly retired “Cops Lunch” at Marechiaro’s in El Cajon, the El Cajon Elks Lodge 1812 (especially Taco Tuesday), and a long-standing Sunday night meet-up with his model train group, the Coyote Pass. A highlight of his retirement was his visit to Europe, especially Germany, to meet some online friends, trade police patches, and see the places that were significant in American history. If Bob were to be remembered for anything it should be his family, service to country and community and his patriotism.
Bob raised 5 children - Laura Koval, Kelly Standring-Ragan, Scott Standring, Linda Cote and Robin Kelsey, has five grandchildren -Ryan Standring, Alexa Evans, Maddison Evans, Piper Cote, and Kelly O’Connell and 2 great grandchildren - Brayden Standring and Rylee Standring. He is also survived by his brother Ernest Standring and former wife, Gail P. Standring.
Bob will be laid to rest at the mausoleum at Singing Hills Cemetery in El Cajon, Ca on April 27, 2019 at 1:30PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in his name for veterans, police or police dog, or the Shriners charities
