Obituary for Mary Lynn Deddeh

Mary-Lynn Drake Deddeh passed away peacefully at an assisted living facility, on April 21, 2020. She was 97 years old. Mrs. Deddeh grew up in Santa Barbara, California and graduated from Santa Barbara State College (now UC Santa Barbara) in 1944. After graduation she taught in elementary and middle schools for the next 43 years. Mary-Lynn’s longest teaching stint was at Hilltop Middle school, in Chula Vista, where she taught English, Drama and Glee Club from 1961 until her retirement in 1987.
While teaching middle school in Monterrey, California Mary-Lynn met Wadie P. Deddeh, an Arabic Language Instructor at the Army Language School. They were married in 1951, moved to Detroit and eventually settled in Chula Vista in 1960.
Mrs. Deddeh embarked on a second career in 1966, when Wadie was elected to the California State Assembly. Her role as a politician’s wife continued until 1993 when Wadie retired from the California State Senate.
Mary-Lynn became a grandmother in 1994, and found that attending to her three beloved grandchildren was her most satisfying career choice.
Mrs. Deddeh was also a talented actress, and performed in local productions in Santa Barbara and Monterrey. She also had a fine singing voice and was an accomplished pianist. Mary-Lynn was best known for her dry, sarcastic wit, her bright personality and light hearted approach to life. She was also an outstanding teacher and role model to many.
Mary-Lynn Drake Deddeh was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Sen. Wadie P. Deddeh (Ret)., and is survived by her son, Judge Peter C. Deddeh, his wife Aleta and three grandchildren Trevor, Samantha and Alexandra. She will be buried in a private ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lamb’s Players Theatre in Coronado, where Mary-Lynn served as an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees, or to the National Comedy Theatre on India St., where her granddaughter, Alexandra, is a Main Stage player.
