Obituary for Joan B Harriman

Joan Harriman (Kloberdanz), 78, unexpectedly but peacefully joined our Heavenly Father at 5:23 am on
8/24/2022 with close family at her side. She was deeply loved and we miss her so much.
Born in Tooele, Utah on 8/10/1944 to Mayme Lucille and Jacob R. Kloberdanz, the family moved to the
Old Town area of San Diego when she was very young and then to acreage in Lemon Grove, where they
were parishioners of St. John of the Cross. She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart and completed
business college at Kelsey Jennings, later working for Whittaker. She met and married the love of her
life, Dave Harriman, on 6/5/1965 and had 3 children. Joan left the working world to be a full-time mom
and the family moved to the Rancho San Diego area.
Classy and beautiful inside and out, she was loving and encouraged us to do what is right always, enjoy
life and work hard at anything we attempted. She taught us faith, grace, optimism and assertiveness.
She is most remembered for her energy, style and sharp wit. Always tan and thin, we envied her style
and her curated resort wardrobe. She was the most organized, tidy and "together" person we know. She
took pride in having a manicured yard and hand-edged lawn, which she maintained herself until
recently. A great conversationalist and listener, she was always fully engaged and present. She laughed
often and loved intensely. She had strong opinions and we sought her advice on pretty much every
topic because she always had the best perspective. Lead-footed with a love of fast American-made cars
with loud exhaust, one night she revved the engine and smoked the tires racing a teenager who later
became her son-in-law in her 5.7L Trans Am GTA; he got a reckless driving ticket and she was faster off
the line. She was German and Croatian but Dad jokingly called her “the Queen.” Until the kids were
grown, family dinners were a “must” and always at 5:30 sharp. She kept a wooden spoon in a drawer as
a deterrent when the kids were young. She never smacked kids with the spoon - all it would take was a
rattle of the “spoon drawer” to get everyone in line. Her love of the sun and warm colors were matched
by her warmth and many memories of family vacations in sunny places.
Joan is survived by husband, Dave, son Dave Harriman Jr. (Ginger), daughters Sandy Lundy (Don), Sonja
Castro (Chris) and 7 beloved grandchildren - Lisa Lundy (28), Jenn Lundy-Niles (26) (Cole), Lauren Lundy
(16), Kimmy Lundy (13), Jake Harriman (13), Josh Harriman (10) and Cash Castro (8), as well as 3 great-
grandchildren, Brayden Lundy (6), Brynlee Lundy-Niles (4) and Blake Lundy-Niles (4 mos.) who absolutely
adored and terribly miss “Grandma J.” She is also survived by her sister, Marlene Miller (Bruce), nephew
Alex Miller (Janet and son Dustin) and niece Stephanie Good (Gabriel) and many others who loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Catholic Visitation, Rosary and Mass of the Resurrection, graveside services and interment will take
place on Thurs. 9/1 in San Diego. For more information please contact the family directly or mortuary.
Celebrant will be Fr. Emilio Magaña, our long-time family friend. In her honor, we invite you to wear her
favorite colors given her disdain for dark clothing. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Fr.
Joe’s Villages in San Diego to help the less fortunate.
