Obituary for Gayle Marie Smith
It is with sadness yet hope for a future reunion that we share that Gayle Smith has passed away. Gayle Marie Smith was born March 3, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Kimball Olsen and Wanda Swenson. She was the middle child of sisters Raye Wood and Kaye Thurgood, who preceded her in death. She leaves behind Gerald (Jerry) Smith, her loving husband of 67 years. Gayle met and married Jerry at BYU.
After graduation, they moved to Santa Monica for two years and finally settled in San Diego for Jerry to start his teaching and coaching career, mostly spent at Sweetwater High School. Gayle spent her life in the service of her family and her faith. Her maternal legacy will be greatly missed, as will her love for her family.
Gayle passed away quietly on April 15, 2022, surrounded by family, leaving behind a large family that will miss her, including six children and spouses, 22 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be honored in a private family service. As she used to say, “we might not have it all together, but together, we have it all.”
