Obituary for Andrew Horvath Jr

Andrew Horvath Jr
Andrew Horvath Jr. was born March 24, 1940 to Andrew Horvat Sr. and Viola
Valosky in Republic, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of 6 children and was
preceded in death by sisters, Marylou White, Julie Lilliock, Donna Umbel, and
brother Stanley Horvath. Andrew is survived by sister Jenny Kolessar.
Andrew was born in Republic, PA and spent his childhood years in Uniontown, PA.
At the age of 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego. He
was an E-5 2 nd Class Petty Officer on the USS Kitty Hawk in supply where he ran
the clothing store, dry cleaning, sales office and Gedunk where he sold milkshakes
and snacks. While on the Kitty Hawk he crossed the equator. He spent 2 years
on shore duty in Charleston, SC on a base in motion picture exchange where he
would issue out movies to the fleet and repair them. The second year he spent 4
months in APA, amphibious assault ships. Here he would transport marines by
ship from one place to another and the remaining 8 months he spent in fire
fighting school and pistol range. He was honorably discharged in December 1966.
Andrew said his biggest blessing was when he met the love of his life, Joy. They
married in Winterhaven, CA and celebrated 60 years of marriage. They have four
children – Randy Horvath, Darlene Steinhauser (Paul), Candy Yolles (Craig), and
Angela Hallmark (Mike).
After leaving the Navy went on to a long career in the roofing business. He
worked 25 years for others before venturing out on his own for another 15 years.
Andrew was a hard working man and was well known in the industry. He had
quite the personality and knew his craft. He would know immediately upon
training someone if they were going to cut it or not and would let them know it.
Most of the time, you could find Andrew working out in the extreme heat, no
shirt and his thermos of hot coffee. He loved driving through San Diego always
pointing out the roofs he put on the homes of family, friends and many business
around town.
Our family was truly blessed to have had a very involved and hands on father and
grandfather. Andy and Joy would drive to 3 different ballgames all over town on
the same day to see all their grandsons compete. They supported all their

grandchildren in school event, sports and any milestones they reached. He was
so proud of his bunch. To date, their union has brought them 9 grandchildren
–Raymond, Jared, Christian, Taylor, Cassidy, Chad, Chaz and Anthony and
Mitchell. 3 great-grandchildren Jeremiah, Jude, Teagan and a 4 th due on New
Year’s Day.
Growing up family time consisted of many, many camping adventures to the
mountains, beach and desert and many family trips to Idaho Falls. Andrew and
Joy enjoyed traveling by RV before and after retirement all across the US. They
visited friends and family in Idaho, Pennsylvania, Georgia, NC, Ohio, Washington,
Oregon. No destination was too far.
Andrew left us on Saturday August 27, 2022 on his final journey home. He is now
home in the arms of the Lord with his parents and siblings that went before him.
So loved by many and missed dearly. May he rest in eternal peace.
